Diablo 3 opening cinematic

Thanks to Shacknews, we have the opening cinematic to Diablo 3. Frankly, I’m not too crazy about the art style (the hand-drawn part looks like any speedpainging video on Youtube).

Diablo 3 Chinese players OP

There has been a lot of argument about the new Diablo 3 Auction House and the fact that you can purchase items of real money.

People who have played World of Warcraft (or any other recent MMO) have warned against Chinese players (a.k.a. farmers) who would relentlessly kill bosses in order to get money for the hours they put in the game.

Other have claimed it will be a level playing field with players from all over the world being able to LIVE off Diablo 3 (ridiculous, I know).

This argument has just been settled with the video of a Chinese beta tester killing the Skeleton King in 3 seconds. Combat starts at 22 seconds, don’t blink or you’ll miss it!

Diablo 3 moon physics

Playing the Diablo 3 beta for hours, one gets used to the unrealistic physics effects.

Now Blizzard claims these are totally intentional and not an accident:

It is absolutely intentional that the barbarian’s skills have crazier impact physics than other classes, because we think that fits with the visual and feel of the character – huge impactful strikes that send dudes flying, whereas the monk might be more of a ‘thousand cuts’ kind of fighter.

I think this in line with the overall cartoony art direction of Diablo 3. While Diablo 2 had a real sense of Gothic horror (as did the original Diablo), the new game is targeted at a wider audience and the horror theme is not so much a theme as a “flavor”. It is present in the monsters and in the storyline but not in the overall look and feel.

Diablo 3 Skeleton King gameplay video

I checked Gamespot’s coverage for Diablo 3 and there was a video called something like “two friends looking for the Skeleton King“.

If you think the title is bad, you should’ve seen the video! Ten minutes of mindless dungeon crawling with NO actual sighting of the Skeleton King.

So if you are interested in the Skeleton King, check out the video below. If you only care of the King, fast-forward to 22:00.

I am a bit disappointed with the boss fight. The mercenary was able to tank the Skeleton King with no issues. The adds that the King summoned died in 3 strikes. The whole fight lasted a minute. I hope other bosses are more of a challenge.

Diablo 3 beta video (streaming)

As you know, the closed Diablo 3 beta has started for some LUCKY game journalists and all Blizzard employees (about 5000). Btw, if you know a Blizzard employee, page him because he has additional invites for family and friends.

For the rest us, we could follow several beta testers feeds that provide streaming video as they play. The quality is not superb but you can get a pretty good idea of what’s happening. Ignore the coala at the start… (imagine it’s a panda, i don’t care).

Diablo 3 at Gamescom

Blizzard has hinted that Diablo 3′s playable beta will be available for gamers attending Gamescom 2011.

Two conclusions based on this little piece of news. First, all German gamers and especially ones living in Cologne are lucky bastards as they will get a chance to play Diablo 3 early.

Second, it signals that Diablo 3 beta is ready in terms of the single player and Blizzard are probably just tweaking with the network code. Battle.net 2.0 is one of the best multiplayer platforms and offers amazing features, so I bet Blizzard would like to integrate them with Diablo 3. Things like chat, invites, etc.
