Vivendi says Diablo 3 a MMO

Update (June 28): Diablo 3 has been announced at the WWI in Paris. You can now review the Diablo 3 trailer, screenshots, as well as demo.

Vivendi is Blizzard’s parent company. So I assume they know what they’re talking about when they said that. Here’s more:

In a recent presentation on Wall Street, Vivendi Universal claimed that all Blizzard franchises were set to become MMO games. Specifically, Starcraft and Diablo. Vivendi also claimed that they will be making an MMO for $50M out of one or the other of the properties, with the neglected soon following. Sounds great!

BlizzardIf I were Vivendi’s CEO, I won’t telling lies about 50 million being spent on development. The funny bit is (although I did expect it) that Blizzard are denying it. I guess Vivendi and Blizzard don’t talk much these days!

At the same time, if you read Paul Sams interview with IGN you definitely get the impression that it’s not only MMOs that Blizzard will be making. Who do you believe?

There’s no reason NOT to believe Vivendi’s presentation to Wallstreet. It’s not like they’re going to lie about something like that, it doesn’t make sense.

One thing that I think should be changed is the in insted of only being able to use the potoins on your belt it should be made so the potion just has to be in your pack like in the playstation ver. of first Diablo game. where you had a heath potion button and a Mana potion button, so making Heath potion key and making a Mana potion key. Can making it like this Can make it a little easier to get out of those harry situations. And why not give the merc. they’re on pack for health and Mana potions only.

Hmm, So if Starcraft ghost was announced long long ago and hasn’t been released, Just imagine how long this will take to come out.

If they make diablo 3 an mmo ill kill you all

Hope it’s for real. Making people running through the same thing over and over again on verious difficulty levels is very tiring. And the graphics…please make it Hi-res and with a lot more opations and details. I can’t bear seeing an orgy of Barbarians who all look alike.

I dont know why Vivendi would say that, maybe they are forcing Blizzard to make them into MMOs because WoW makes them both so much money, and they probably think making an SC and D2 MMO will heighten the amount of people paying for them.

  8. 8 Craig Sep 27th, 2007 at 12:54 pm

Diablo mmo would be amazing if they did it right, but I would want a different game than WoW, the only reason it’s doing as well as it is is because of

    1)Blizzard’s name and rep

    and

    2)Warcraft’s Franchise and name

Star Wars Galaxies is a much better game in all gameplay aspects

but the next mmo I play is going to need to be more than those currently out. That and a Diablo mmo better have some heavy pvp elements, or I’d be a pissed mofo.

Vivendi is going to start messing with stuff they shouldn’t be messing with.

A Diablo MMO?! How unoriginal is that … .like no one at Blizzard had already thought of that.

Sure, while we’re at it, let’s make a Starcraft MMO too! And also a Lost Vikings MMO!

Executives with $$$ in their eyes are going to slowly replacing Blizzard executives … soon the assimilation will be complete….

I just hope that Diablo 3 is better than the LOD. It is fun but common on, why not make various quests in different difficulties. The same quest in all three is boring me to the point of no return.

HellGate London had a Beta testing not to long ago, then waited on the release to iron out more bugs… Its a perfect way to ensure a GREAT product… PLEASE anyone who has information or Connections to the developers post here and let me know, Ill check back every other day, Thanks!

“Executives with $$$ in their eyes are going to slowly replacing Blizzard executives”

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh well done, that was beautiful! Come off it, do you really believe that Blizzard’s run by happy fluffy gamer-lovers at the moment? Hell no. These people made WoW, the first MMO designed for the lowest common denominator. They did it because it was guaranteed to make them money. It worked.

Guess what else is guaranteed to make them money from stupid fanboys, blinded by years in a Diablo desert?

That’s right kids, D3 the MMO is coming, and it’s going to be fucking blasphemous.

  19. 19 genshiro Dec 14th, 2007 at 7:17 am

i wud kill myself if there’s no d3!

  20. 20 Matt Dec 14th, 2007 at 3:25 pm

Excuse my “blasphemy” but isn’t D2 pretty much an “MMO”? I mean you do have to join a game rather than just join the world, but otherwise isn’t it very similar? I.E. build character up through many levels, online ecomomy, trading, guilds, PVP… am I missing something?

I would like to keep having to join games, but maybe allow 32 players per game or something like that. I don’t like the MMO part of WoW; it’s too hard to find good groups to play with. Searching through the list of manually-named games was and still is the best and most efficient way to find people to play with who are on the same page as you. WoW just ends up being a lot of people online who are all doing their own thing by themselves or in groups of 2-3.

I played D1, and D2, for many years and have only been playing WoW for a couple of months, but I still greatly prefer D2.

If they want D3 to be awesome, then they only need to fix the bugs (not really bugs but more quirks) in D2, make the graphics and animations super awesome, and figure out a way to make an old friend feel fresh and new, without reinventing the wheel. I’d like to see the viewpoint the same– the whole “3d/2d” 3rd person viewpoint works so well in D2. Changing to a true 3D world or a 1st person viewpoint changes the soul of the game and could spell disaster.

  21. 21 HellFire Dec 19th, 2007 at 4:00 am

QUOTE “Changing to a true 3D world or a 1st person viewpoint changes the soul of the game and could spell disaster.”

How true… It would be a big step towards change and could cause the game to lose its Diablo feeling… Also if anyone has noticed Hellgate London was created by the MAKERS of Diablo and it is a game allowing the user to choose between 1st person and 3rd, I would be impressed if D3 had the same choice, Like I said looking into the face of Diablo would be amazing given the right graphics.

I have one suggestion to those running DirectX9.0 you might wanna get a better G-card!

  22. 22 easyness Jan 5th, 2008 at 10:08 am

Please don’t make a MMO :-( It will make lot of us really unhappy. I stick with Blizzard when they denying the fact.

  23. 23 DAHbjorn Jan 7th, 2008 at 4:11 pm

“QUOTE “Changing to a true 3D world or a 1st person viewpoint changes the soul of the game and could spell disaster.”

many thougt that about gta to, but when gta 3 was published it was a massive success!

you’re probably right, it wouldn’t be quite the same with a changed perspective, but if its the same you want, then you should stick to D1 and 2.

I’m certain that whatever blizzy comes up with is gona be great… of course: should they fuck up on this particular game i’d probably never forgive them :P

  24. 24 ... Jan 21st, 2008 at 11:26 am

Ok well I doubt that They are going to make D3 a MMO. Unless they are trying to attract all of the WOW players out there.. But in Reality making a MMO based Diablo will either draw attention away from WOW or Dissapoint Diablo fans. It would be a huge mistake!!

  25. 25 Grandeur Feb 6th, 2008 at 7:48 pm

Do you honestly think that a company that grosses almost a billion dollars a year can thrash such a great idea as diablo? They will hire, fire, and rehire and throw so much god damn money at it. They will pay top dollar for people who LOVE diablo to make the game as pleasing as possible and if you don’t see that, your fuckin dumb.

  26. 26 res Feb 19th, 2008 at 5:41 am

im excited to release the diablo 3,but i dont MMO for the diablo 3….

  27. 27 Shadow Mar 1st, 2008 at 1:27 pm

For those of us thinking about the business world im pretty sure we’ve already figured out what any company, looking to make money, will do.

    -Make Diablo an MMO

-Throw all the money they can at it to make the graphics and such better, but the key to this idea is to not make it too far out of the reach of the average jo to where he needs to go out and buy the top of the line alienware to do so

In order to achieve these elements im already expecting the game to not come out for quite a while, say 2-3 years at least after developed and beta tested, or even longer if they want it to come out with better graphics and such as computers get better, its just a matter of time in my book until they make another Diablo game and im excited to see the results

I personally would love a Diablo MMO but there has to be certain things about it.

First: I’d like to have the option, like in WoW, to place as the “evil” side as well. I mean seriously, who has’nt thought about playing FOR the side of evil in Diablo? But if it offered the same type of PvP as WoW I’d be disappointed.

Second: If it had the same view point as WoW I dont see how that’d be all that bad. I mean Warcraft was an RTS and they did a great job with WoW, so its very obvious that they have the ability to revamp a game like that.

Third: No mounts. Seriously! I mean come on, it would not be as gratifying if I could just ride/fly into Diablo’s Fortress or where ever he’d be in this. Nothing like completely tearing his armies apart before charging into battle with the Big Asshole himself.

Fourth: SAME SKILLS AS BEFORE FOR CLASSES. Maybe some new ones but I would love to see a frozen orb or a whirlwind rendered in some sweet ass full 3D views.

Fifth: This really is kinda silly but after playing so many games with ragdoll physics D3 would have to have them. Seeing Diablo flop about after I just smashed him with my Grandfather would be so pleasing.

    and thats just my view

regardless though i really hope D3 is on its way regardless of it being and MMO or not.

Hopefully, I will see this game sometime in the -NEAR- future, but… Barring that, if they make it a MMO, it will be somewhat dissappointing, as it will lose a lot of the style that I had previously linked to it, and I agree that if it is made into a MMO it will eventually turn out like WoW, which, although I play it, is -FAR- from my favorite game. I’m thinking… If they did something like what GW, and HG:L did, and make it so that the towns are hubs, and you can choose your party from there and adventure with people of your own choosing, that it will make it better than just one giant game world. Also, yes, they need to keep at least -SOME- of the oritional skills from before, even though they didn’t from D1 to D2… It would be one of the most epic sights ever to watch a group of Orb sorc going at it in “3D”, which is another thing I’m not so sure about. I would like it if they kept to the top-down view, or 2.5D, that the previous games had. Sure, make it so that you can rotate your camera, but don’t let us get all first-person with it. It wouldn’t be the same. Plus, and this one is just a shot in the dark, but what are they going to do for “bad guys”? I mean, I’m pretty sure that everyone here had offed all three Prime Evils at least once, probably thousands of times if you played on B.Net… Plus, Andariel and Duriel, two of the four Lesser Evils from Sanctuary. I really would like to know more about the game world, especially this. I mean, they’re dead. Seriously. Plus, wasn’t the world supposed to end when the Worldstone was destroyed? I know that it didn’t “end” in D2, but that’s because you technically stopped existing in the game world before it was destroyed, and they just gave you higher difficulties to give us something to do. I’d like to see how they manage to explain that one… You know, from reading this it looks like I’m not waiting expectantly for D3, but I am, I have been a fan of the Diablo series since the day D1 was released, I have version 1.0 of D1, Hellfire, and D2, and got LOD the day after it was released. I will be as happy or happier than anybody I know when D3 is done. But there is quite a bit that I am looking forward to seeing explained.

    /rant Lol

i know it’s clear by now that diablo 3 won’t be an MMO, Vivendi said diablo will turn mmo in the end .. not which diablo or when! so there’s still no proof of diablo 3 being an mmo ..

diablo 3 can come out before “domain of diablo” comes out

  31. 31 Stan May 14th, 2008 at 8:16 pm

shit i dont care if diablo 3 is a MMO or not, i played D2 LOD for years on end i loved it, so im so excited for D3 to come out i dont care what kinda game is is (As long as it isn’t 1st person pov) so as soon as D3 comes out my ass will be glued to the pc, i played WoW for almost 2 years but after awhile it just gets boring, or you get fucked over some way or another…But please hurry with D3!! =)

  32. 32 Doomsflames Jun 19th, 2008 at 4:01 pm

Yes Diablo: Tears of Darkness (As its place holder name is) will be an MMO. I already know because from finishing up with DeVry, they were already looking for new people 2 years ago right when I was leaving with my BS in CIS, and some of the newer talent coming into the industry.

First and for most from talking with a few of the people who know the project, its not going to be like WoW. Main reason is Blizzard wants to now try to capitalize on the other side of the industry, the hardcore pvp base side that is now trying out games like AoC, and also still playing games like Shadowbane, Pre Ren UO, DAoC, and so forth.

The game will be keeping its rated M setting, so this in turn will allow them to do things with it they can’t do with WoW, including more blood, gore, and even more explicit language like you saw in the old two previous games.

There will also not be “Realms” where you are good or evil with a faction, but more or less based on your actions you become good or evil. This also allows more endless pvp and different set benefits on both sides. This also means just because hes good and you’re too…doesn’t mean you can’t drop a blow to his back side for talking smack in chat.

The projected time frame they were giving in recruitment was from late 2006 to mid 2010 for the game. So don’t be expecting any actual press releasing till mid 2009 when they start attempting to hook people in, if not early 2009 right after Christmas.

  33. 33 Oranji Designs Nov 8th, 2009 at 12:52 am

Saying Diablo III will be an MMORPG is stupid. Diablo already has a crapload of multiplayer features anyway. And a standard feature of Diablo has been Hardcore mode, with permanent character death. If Blizzard/Vivendi were to keep Diablo the way their fans like it, Hardcore mode would have to still be in place. And no-one likes permanent character death in MMORPGs.
This has to be a joke.
