Gamespot: Diablo 3 rumors persist

Illidan StormrageGamespot’s coverage of Starcraft 2 has been spot on. At the same time, IGN has got it wrong before when it comes to Diablo 3, so I take these articles with a grain of salt.

In essence, Rob Pardo talks how Starcraft 2 is one of the smaller projects currently in Blizzard:

Pardo also dropped a hint at the scale of Blizzard’s future plans, saying that the 40 developers working on Starcraft II are “one of the smaller teams.” Job listings on the Blizzard site have indicated it is working on a “next-gen MMO”–which the company said will not be another World of Warcraft. Also, rumors persist that Diablo III is in development.

Now, Paul Sams also said something similar - that Blizzard is working on three projects.

Here’s how I interpret it - Diablo 3 and the next-gen MMO are probably the same thing. After all, what’s better than a MMO in the Diablo universe? You got Heaven and Hell as factions… you got an Epic conflict that’s going to dwarf everything that WoW has. Frankly, who cares about Illidan when the can go after Diablo.

So, you figure that Diablo will be on the next-gen systems? (Xbox 360, PS3)

AND an MMO on top of that? I doubt it. Diablo will stay PC

No, AcidReign… if you read carefully, it says “next-gen MMO”. All I’m saying is that it could be that the next-gen MMO and Diablo 3 are the same thing.

After all, who would prefer to roll a Tauren when he could roll a Demon instead. I’m definitely on the side of Hell if Diablo 3 is a MMO!

3. 3 Me Jun 4th, 2007 at 1:21 pm

well i hope diablo3 not to be an MMO, it is true that there could be the two factions hell and heaven but, if they do this they will kill the diablo storyline.
it was good for warcraft to bee an MMO because his story allows it, the diferent races were always figthing betwen them but in diablo you always choose a hero and kill the bad boys…
thats my opinion, i hope diablo3 not to be an MMO.

PD: sorry about my bad english XDD

Sounds about right dude, looks very much like Diablo3 and the next-gen-MMO will be the same. Tbh I think this contradicts my feelings tho:
- Diablo 3 being next-gen? I wouldn’t expect anything else
- Diablo 3 an MMO? Would mean competition for WoW by it’s own developer. Isn’t that strange? Especially since Blizz already let on they wanna release an expansion for WoW each year…

It strikes me that there are alot of rumours on a Diablo presentation at Blizzcon. Could be acknowledging the Diablo franchise or Diablo 3 related (as suggested elsewhere), but it could also simply not be happening.
Here is a quote from d3portal.com:
“Yes diablo 3 will be announced. BlizzCon looks like the perfect moment/place for Blizzard to announce it. There are a lot of rumors floating around and possible “leaks” from sources saying that Diablo 3 will be announced at BlizzCon.
According to Paul Sams interview, he did say Blizzard “will have a major product announcement in 2007,” and that Blizzard was currently working on at least three other unannounced titles at the moment. So far, we’ve got a WoW expansion, a StarCraft 2, and…well that’s it. That makes two…
When you think about it, it’s sure that they were going to announce StarCraft 2 in Korea. The person announcing it would have been shot if they would have announced anything else than StarCraft 2. Everyone in Korea wanted to see a StarCraft 2. But BlizzCon (in August) is perfect to announce Diablo 3!”

This indicates nothing on Diablo 3 being announced at Blizzcon. Like I said before, it sounds unlikely to me there will be another announcement by Blizz at all in 2007. Go figure: they already released TBC and announced SC2, wouldn’t ‘(re)activating’ another franchise be some kinda overkill?
Once again also: don’t get me wrong: I’ll be the first to cheer my lungs out when I see the announcement!!

Greetings,
i think that D3 will me a MMO game type since at the end of D2 the world stone broke, and thus opens the gate between heaven and hell, so therefore, player can choose char from Hell, Heaven or in-between. that then becomes PvP in the game.
however, i think there still gonna be a single story mode for the game.
well, i could be wrong, lets just hope D3 comes out ASAP.
regards,
D

Here is what Ive read over the years, some will mix Im sure with what has already been said, but, here goes.

Diablo 3 apparently was finished already at one point in time. It was an MMO, like WoW, with a massive playing field. There were two factions, heaven and hell, like most have speculated. Apparently most unique items had a “good” and “bad” side to it, but, just the names of the items changed, and none of the stats, so there was no positive to having one over the other. It also did not come to full completion because after much testing (by the team themselves) it just wasn’t fun, a.k.a addicting. The world was just to massive to get around easily enough that a person got bored before they got to where they needed to be. So, they stripped the game completely (just like Starcraft: Ghost and we all see how that turned out >.

While I believe that Diablo 3 is a definate and it’s about time I also realize that they may be branching to a new franchize. However good Diablo, Starcraft, and Warcraft are as their own seperate franchizes and unvierses, Blizzards is still a game developer. This means their goal is to put games in the hands of consumers and in turn MAKE MONEY. What better way to make money than to create a whole new universe for the dedicated fans of blizzard to immerse themselves in. Personally I foresee something modern, something noone has ever done. This is all speculation I am just an average gamer but I think blizzard will be making a new rpg whether mmo or not, I believe they have many more stories to tell.

On the note of Diablo 3 I hope that it is not mmo… it’s just not the diablo style… an mmo can only make a story progress a certain way without the things the players achieve in the game becoming contradictory. I love my WoW, I love my War3 and I want to love my Diablo 3. However… if Diablo 3 is mmo… WoW loses me as a customer… and I won’t be the only one… blizz doesn’t want that.

For a MMO, there must be two different factions. Although I don’t think you will be able to choose between heaven and hell. If you notice, we have always been playing with humans and interacting with both factions. It is clear that we are caught in the middle of their fight, and to be honest, that’s even better.

If a D3 MMO comes out, I believe we will play a human character who chooses to go to a faction extreme based on quests and decisions. Like in WOW where if you gain reputation with Bloodsail Bucanneers your rep decreases with Booty Bay.
Let’s say you concentrate efforts in hell related quests, you will, slowly, getting in with them and have heaven, and its players, as your enemy. That, for me, is a sweet system and works extremely good with the story.

On the other side it would suck having hell as your ally because at the end, Diablo is the main target. I play the game to face him. So it goes against the game itself having hell as a playable faction.
But then again, for the ones who know, the story tells that Diablo, and his brothers, were banned from hell, bringing back the concept of heaven x hell x diablo. This concept is similar to Wow where the two factions, although being enemies, are somehow united against a bigger enemy. But I believe for this to work, more story should’ve been told.

As the “next-gen MMO” goes. Wow has become an old game. Since it came out, other MMO games, with new features, have been released, although they are not as big, they have innovative features that may build up to become something that will knock WOW out of its throne.
Blizzard cannot rely on WOW forever, although it’s a giant and amazing game. Being how they are, the must raise the bar once again.
If they are going to release a new MMO, as they say they are, no franchise is better than Diablo at this point. For them to announce a new franchise, out of the blue, as their next big thing, it wouldn’t make an impact. It would be a new franchise after all, without a fanbase. I’m a vivid fan of both the Warcraft and Diablo franchise, but I never got into the Starcraft franchise, I can’t say I’m a general Blizzard fan.

But overall, Blizzard has a great franchise to make a MMO out of it. The storyline, the conflicts, everything is simply bigger than the warcraft storyline at this point. Let’s wait and see.

Diablo III being an MMO does not mean that it will be a heaven vs. hell circumstance. It could always be like WOW, but with way better graphics, stick to the storyline, and go on to kill Diablo, among other demons.

15. 15 Stalker7d7 Jul 13th, 2007 at 6:15 am

Also, I do think it would be really cool to have something like Link said above, start out neutral, do quests for each side and whatnot to define your character. And hey, the Hell side could have a quest in slaying “god” or whatever is chosen as a leading figure for Heaven, what if it’s really Tyreal? And the Heaven side would have a quest of going on to slay Diablo. And then, they can have much much more quests after that, and even other quests slaying Diablo again and again…he does keep finding a way back to life. AND getting stronger.

16. 16 Link Jul 13th, 2007 at 9:12 am

I agree, it doesn’t mean that it will be heaven vs. hell. But the concept of two factions to allow PvP is something seen on all big MMOs out there. If there’s going to be two factions for D3, Heaven and Hell has got to be them.

But to be honest, it would suck for all Hell players not to be able to kill Diablo. That’s the money shot for the game. That’s what we look forward to. I would like to have the prime evils as enemies to both Heaven and Hell therefore both factions would have the chance to kill Diablo.

If I’m not wrong, the story goes that Diablo and his brothers were casten out of hell. Diablo had to work his way into our world and tried to take over. Baal and Mephisto got trapped by the humans and Diablo managed to accomplish their goal, ultimately freeing both his brothers, assuming his form in the human world and almost took over if it wasn’t for our warriors in D2.
But back to my point, Diablo and his brothers are not allied to Hell. They are their own faction.

Ok, so d3 is not out yet, i dun care rite now, i just wanna know a few things:
1)if d3 does come out, will it be more mmo? like not max 8 players per game?
2)will it have monthly fees?
3)is wow worth getting instead of d2?
4)if d3 comes out, will it be better then wow?

if u answer, tyvm i will check every now n den.

It is suspected that Blizzard are working on a brand new title but what we have to remember is that Blizzard are very broad about they way they say things. Sometimes they pull the covers over, sometimes they reveal it all but they never say enough or say not enough to solidify facts.

For example, Blizzard recently said that it is possible for Warcraft 4 to be made after Starcraft 2 ships. This suggests that Blizzard are hinting at WoW having a finite life span and that they are not intending to continue it forever. They’ve had massive success with World of Warcraft and it will probably keep going long after they stop development on it so once they get to the point where WoW is failing (so to speak) they will drop it and move on. It is possible that this will occur when Warhammer, Age of Conan and Star Trek Online is released so we may see then drop WoW sooner rather than later. Now, it wouldn’t make any sense to create World of Warcraft 2 unless a new plotline is developed. Plotlines can be developed using offline games far easier than online games because in an MMO environment, lore is second to gameplay. In a single player offline environment, it is lore that carries players through the game. So that said, we could see World of Warcraft getting dropped at some point in the near to distant future, possibly to coincide with the developement of Warcraft 4. This is again reinforced by the fact that Blizzard are developing another MMO at this moment in time. Diablo is a well established franchise and most if not all of the players of World of Warcraft have played or heard of Diablo over the last few years. Personally, I think MMORPGs have rendered Offlien RPGs obsolete for the most part and we will see very few RPGs liek that being released anymore. Persistent, online environments seem to be the way to go, and there is far more roleplaying when other real people are around. Diablo was an RPG that could be played online but there was nothing persistent about the worlds you played in so we might see a system whereby players can play through a single player offline campaign and also pay a subscriptions to play in a persistent world although this is to complex and it will most likely just be a bog standard WoW-like (but far, far, far darker) MMOG gameplay.

Personally, I’d like to see a Diablo MMO over an offline game. I’d also like to see it over a Battlenet solution. I personally think persistent worlds like Azeroth are far, far more entertaining than none-persistent offline worlds or battlenet server based gameplay.

Role on Diablo MMO.

well i m a WoW player and i will definitely choose diablo over WoW!! hope that D3 is on its way..

20. 20 uberpwnzorz Sep 23rd, 2007 at 11:36 pm

So if it is an MMO, their will prolly be raids like in WoW. So the Heaven faction will raid Satan, and the Hell Faction will raid Jesus? I don’t like that much.

21. 21 My two cents ... Oct 2nd, 2007 at 5:00 am

They wouldn’t make people raid Satan and/or Jesus as the game hasn’t made any allusions to “Gods” or to other religious beliefs in similar regards. The “Heavens”, the Angels’ “faction”, is merely a representative of a power that is much bigger than the humans in the Diablo world, and represent “The Light” (the good side). Likewise, it’s a similar concept for “Hell” in that it represents a group with completely opposite motives to the Angels (i.e. they are bent on destruction and are the game’s “bad guys”).

“But back to my point, Diablo and his brothers are not allied to Hell. They are their own faction.” - Link.

As Diablo and brothers were overthrown by the Lesser Evils, I think it’d be a reasonable assumption to make that Hell is “allied” with whoever is in power at the time.

If Diablo was to return to power and take the thrown again, Hell’s minions would be working for him.
