Diablo 2 Sets took notoriously long time to collect. So long, in fact, these items were usually obsolete by the time you collected all the pieces.
It looks like Blizzard is determined to improve on Diablo 2 items and the set items are one of the challenges.
Says Jay Wilson, Lead Designer of Diablo 3:
We understand the problems with item sets. We want to solve them. Set items are under work now, if we cant’ find a way to solve the problem it won’t be in the game. But we’ve got a couple of ideas on the table and we think it’ll work out.
Whatever Jay is doing, I hope it works. Last time I played, I completed Sigon’s Complete Steel somewhere around level 25. Considering the set has a level requirement of 6, this is something that’s definitely subject to improvement by the Diablo 3 team.

While sets were pretty worthless in single player, they did make a lot of sense on battle.net. You collected sets through not only treasure hunting, but trading as well.
Agree with Matt!
What you say is true but I would still like to see set items in Diablo 3. Also I think the number of playing playing online in this new game will be quite higher than that of Diablo 2.
Myself I never played Diablo 2 online due to lack of broadband connectivity back then :/
Oh well, Diablo series is still awesome I think and I can’t wait for Diablo 3 =D
Most of the D2 set were kinda useless ont battle.net expept probably tal rasha and IK, other were unbalanced and unique item are often better with that sets.
