Diablo 3: Lilith revisited

Diablo monster - LilithRichard A. Knaak recently talked about the upcoming Diablo trilogy. During the IRC interview, Knaak was asked about Lilith:

Medievaldragon: Hope I am not spoiling much at this point, however I really have to ask. Blizzard introduced a new Pandemonium Event monster named Lilith (Act V) in Diablo II Patch 1.11.

Knaak: She is, I believe, although she will look a little different by the game’s point. Her part in the trilogy is major.

Here’s the Lilith info from Blizzard (patch 1.11):

Lilith is believed to be Queen of the Succubi and matriarch of demons. After her legions of Succubi and strongest daughter Andariel were killed by mortals who successfully defended the Worldstone, Lilith swore to personally intervene. She masterminded the revival of Diablo by manifesting herself in the mortal realm and performing a ritual of Dark Summoning. This ritual, long thought to be impossible by the most powerful mortal wizards, allowed Lilith to link with Diablo across realms, strengthening him until he was finally able to once again reincarnate himself in the mortal plane. Rage and a deep yearning for revenge boiled within the eyes of the Lord of Terror, and together he and Lilith resurrected the two remaining Prime Evils as well as Duriel and Izual, two of their strongest agents.

I still don’t get it. Is Lilith supposed to be new Arch-Evil that will appear in Diablo 3 or she’s just a “facilitator”, an agent who will revive Diablo and the rest of the demon bunch in order to recreate the typical Diablo plotline?

Anyone has any insight re: Lilith?

From what I managed to gather from the book and other books Lilith is very much involved in war between Heaven and Hell as it is played out on the mortal realm.
Together with Inarius, they are responsible for the creation of Sanctuary itself (With a few other entities not yet mentioned) and a race called the Nephalem (The voices speaking through the Barbarian Ancients refer to them selfs as the Nephalem).
The Nephalem are suppose to be a hydride of both demon and angel and probably stronger than both, from what i could understand, Lilith wanted to make them rulers of Sanctuary and she as their queen, for that she was banished by Inarius and the Nephalem were buried in the same location as the World Stone, humans came after, either created in Inarius’s image or molded from the Nephalem, it is not clear.
The questions that are to be answered in the next books of the trilogy are what came first, is the World Stone a vessel meant to contain the Nephalem and their power?, did it came to existence before that, at the creation of Sanctuary?, or was it created only after the events of the first book?
And of course, the great puzzle that the book presented, if the creation of Sanctuary and its existence were a secret of Hell and Inarius, unknown to the Heavens, how is it that it is Izual who tells the Prime Evils about the Soul Stones who originated from the World Stone according to Tyrael.
What puzzles me the most is that up until now, every text pointed to the World Stone as an artifact which holds the power to either shield an entire realm by creating barriers around it (And in a much smaller scale, contain a Prime Evil) or shatter existing barriers between two realms and that is why the Prime Evils wanted to gain control over it.
Knowing now that the World Stone might hold a way to summon a race of creatures more powerful than Angels really makes you want to know the full nature of that artifact and what its powers are capable of.

Lilith. I really don’t know too much about her. Actually, Blizzard never went into a lot of detail about her. But I would really like to see a come back tying the first and second Diablos together more. Maybe bring back Lazarus and Leoric…. or how bout the loyal guard Lachdanan. That guy was awesome, plus in the game he tells the player that if there is ever a time that he is needed to ask. Well, story wise, you could really use that to an advantage. I’m also hoping that the Diablo book location are added. Such as revisiting the Church in Tristram, the home in “Moon of the Spider”, the darkened kingdom, and the waterways in the 2nd book. I’m also glad that someone finally decided to write something on the Sin War. It was about time. The first Diablo had an amazing back story that I felt was under appreciated. I have all the books, both games, and both expansions. Where the hell is Diablo 3. Seriously. I hope Blizzard brings back some of the old characters!

I also haven’t read the Sin War books yet. I’m in the middle of one of the DragonLance novels, then it’s to the new books.
