Diablo 3 Art Director leaves

This news just came in from Gamasutra . Brian Morrisroe, art director on Diablo 3, is leaving Blizzard.

In light of the whole argument about the new COLOR in Diablo 3 screenshots, you’d expect someone to lose their job. Not so this time, Brian is leaving on his own accord. What’s more, Blizzard said that Brian’s art direction is nothing short of amazing!

Part of Morrisroe’s legacy will likely be the somewhat controversial art design for Diablo III, which fans lambasted vocally in online petitions for what they thought was a lapse in its predecessor’s traditionally bleak, Gothic look.

“This change won’t impact the game,” continued the statement. “We’re really pleased with the look and feel that Brian helped create for Diablo III, and the new person we bring onboard will work with the other artists on the team to maintain the art style moving forward.”

If you ask me, that’s like making a pink Harley Davidson and then say it’s just like we always wanted.

Blizzard starts to sound more and more ignorant .. i think the success of wow got to their head!

finally some sense is getting through their thick skulls

We all agree Diablo is the perhaps the best game ever invented. The first Diablo had it in theory everything right, the story, the idea, words can not describe it, too bad it came out on a time technology didnt really had the support for game developers like we have today, and of course the fact that there were only 3 characters, but besides those two points, they had everything right …

We got addicted and since blizzard has been abusing us players, specially this ridiculous gap from D2 to D3, I’m mean come on!!

We waited who knows how many years (like 8) for Diablo 3, the game looks great (but really anything a bit better than D2 would have been completely awesome). However it looks like Blizzard has been drinking the cool-aid from EA, and I cant help but feel this repulsing feeling of a hint from other EA games and I jsut hate it …

I just hope that whoever comes in, remembers the details and idea of what got us to love this game and STOP TURNING IT INTO SOME EA NIGHTMARE!! …

Thats all, I express my opinion, dont bother responding into it cuz I dont care …

    Thank you,

fcking whiners… why wont you just be happy that the game is coming instead of whining about colors. if the game is too bright for yiu then adjust your screen color

  4. 4 Rafe Aug 10th, 2008 at 7:05 am

Agreed. Devs knowledge > fanboi whining when it comes to understanding what can and can’t be done without messing with gameplay. You don’t like it? Make your own game.

Wow, what a bunch of panzies! Has Blizzard ever relased a game that wasn’t good? I’m not a WoWhead or anything, but I can admit that the game is brilliant. I can’t believe people are doubting Blizzard after they’ve released quality release after quality release since the company first started. And now people are getting all shitty over colors from a few screen shots? They’re being accused of being sellouts? Wow…some people are absolutely retarded.

  6. 6 Eddy Aug 11th, 2008 at 9:36 am

They improve the playability through the art design and everybody complains. If gamers get their way we will see nothing but crap sequels from now until the end of the human race. Wait…

  7. 7 Sticks Aug 12th, 2008 at 1:05 pm

I’m sick of the whiners. Wait until the game is out before you freak out about it. Maybe just maybe Blizzard knows what they are doing, friggin people give them a chance and I’m sure they will give us the game we have been waiting forever for. I for one loved the new look of the game: the carnage of the gameplay (bodies flying across the screen whats more theraputic than that after a shitty day), the rich depth and feel of the backgrounds, the increased character detail, and the music (how sweet was that) I mean seriously how could you not be totally pumped for this game.

Go Blizzard stick to your guns a don’t back down over the color themes, after all whiners are twice as loud as the rest of us who think your doing a kick ass job.

Oh and one personal plee please for the love of all things holy give us a paladin class character. After all he is the one constant that has always been there in his basic sword and sheild form.

I think Blizzard should create a pole on the potential character classes and let the fans decide what they want (Just a thought). Even if they don’t use the info to influence there final decision it would be worth seeing what everyone wants.

Hurry up and set a release date I’m dying here

While I agree with that the playability of Diablo 3 looks mightily improved, the colors and overall environment effects are not close to what it should be. Some people may think its not a big deal but it is. Diablo is about its dark gothic environments and to base the looks of everything on a World of Warcraft look is just sad. I really hope they make changes by the time it hits the shelves or I think many people will be disappointed with it. When I saw the real time play of the game online, I seriously thought it was WoW of how it looked. Diablo and WoW maybe from blizzard but they are two entirely different games and it should reflect that both in the art and playability.

Have any of you idiots even seen the gameplay videos??? It’s not THAT colorful. And by the way, what the hell about act 2 in diablo 2? Did everyone just skip act 2???? Was it dark and gloomy?? No, it wasn’t, it was a desert where the sun shone brightly, quit your bitching.

The dungeon that is shown in the D3 gameplay video looks fine to me. It’s dark with some green and blue tint. Green and blue TINT, is that what bothers you? Shut the hell up and go do some math, nerds. It looks fine. Lastly even the outdoors scene isn’t that colorful, what would you have the makers do? Cover the trees in blood and light them on fire? Yeah that would look great……. It’s raining is it not? That darkens things up a bit. God all you idiots just infuriate me.

To quote Rafe from up above, you jerks don’t like the scheme, make your own game.

K i’ve been reading the comments on here and Jacob and Hmm? both have the right ideas. People need to stop bitching about how the screenies look. They look FINE! If any of you fanboy whiners can make a game that has more then 10 MILLION people that play it then you can talk, for now shut the fuck up.

I would like to state to everyone who says that Blizzard’s previous games have done so well so why do you think diablo 3 will not be good? My answer to this question is simple, and no one seems to see this, its not the same developers who developed created Blizzards past titles so its not fair to use those as proof how well diablo 3 will do. Diablo 3 I honstly think will be a fun game to play and most people, if not all, the people who criticize it will buy it and play it and think it is a really great game. I will however end by saying diablo is meant to have a dark (not as in colour but feeling) gothic feeling as we have seen from diablo 1. D3 looks like it does a better job looking similar to d1 then the second edition did, but still no where near as close. Diablo one was about a lone warrior traveling through demonic frightening chambers, and after this game it was never the same.

You got that shit right kratos, Diablo 1 was the only game out of the trilogy that sent chills down my spine.

  13. 13 Kratos Sep 7th, 2008 at 7:00 pm

Does anyone think diablo 3 will have a paladin /knight class ? Females cant be knights or paladins so i dont know how that would work, it could perhaps be a male only class, the barbarian should be a male only class females being barbarians is very strange , also what would be the skills of the knight/paladins class as blizzard seems to be using less skills but ones that actually are based on the character class

  14. 14 meow Sep 8th, 2008 at 9:40 pm

I’m pretty sure females can be knights/pallys.

  15. 15 Kratos Sep 9th, 2008 at 5:06 pm

No your wrong meow females can not be knights or paladins or any heavy melee type warrior.

  16. 16 meow Sep 12th, 2008 at 3:03 am

WoW says they can! Except the plate in WoW for females is slutty. Plus zons sorcs and assassins could all wear plate in Diablo 2, Gothic Plate, Full Plate Mail, Plate Mail, Light Plates and all of their better qualitys also.

  17. 17 Kratos Sep 12th, 2008 at 8:47 am

just becasue female classes in diablo 2 could wear heavy armor that doesnt make them a knight or a paladin. Being a knight actually has nothing to do with wearing armor. It’s being skilled in melee combat with swords. WoW is fairy tales they make females be melee warriors to attract male players. Males make up most gamers thats the reason why all female video/computer game characters are attractive looking and barely clothed, to attract males to the game.

  18. 18 Kratos Sep 12th, 2008 at 8:51 am

one more thing, why do you think blizzard gave the amazon in diablo 2 those enoumouse breasts? honestly they are very large. Why? to attract male players.

  19. 19 meow Sep 14th, 2008 at 7:10 am

Thats enormous pal, dont hurt yourself.

Play nice boys, just because you disagree with each other doesn’t mean you have to start a comment vs. comment war. I’m going to have to agree with kratos because even though WoW does have female paladins and stuff like that, female knights and paladins in the Diablo universe just seem pretty bizarre

  27. 27 kratos Sep 23rd, 2008 at 5:36 pm

Thanks Joe King its nice to see someone who agrees with me. Meow, that is an interesting age to pick for me. Mind telling me why im 64?

  28. 28 Kratos Sep 25th, 2008 at 12:24 pm

what does everyone reaing my comment think the next three diablo 3 classes will be? Keep in mind blizzard appears to want to increases the speed of combat, so therefore a hit and run archer type warrior is probably out, so give me your opinions, and no cleric/paladin type character I doubt there will be any type of character like that. Also blizzard stated no other characters will be returning, its only the barbarian coming back.

  29. 29 kratos Sep 28th, 2008 at 9:06 pm

the next three characters will probably be the Kung Fu master, Assassinator, and the Dragon Ninja

  30. 30 kratos Sep 29th, 2008 at 9:36 pm

Actually the next three classes will probably be the the Pirate, Spidervine (a combination of spiderman and wolverine) and the Archologist (a scientist who uses his magnifying glass to burn enemies with the sun.

  31. 31 Ryan May 17th, 2009 at 6:29 am

I think the next three characters will be the Brainy Smurf, the Hefty Smurf and the Smurfette. Azrael and Gargamel will be boss characters.

    I read,

“Joe King Sep 5th, 2008 at 6:43 am

You got that shit right kratos, Diablo 1 was the only game out of the trilogy that sent chills down my spine.”

I can’t agree more. Most of the people who don’t understand the complaints about a more Gothic atmosphere didn’t play Diablo I, or if they did, they played it after playing Diablo II (which changes the interpretation).

Its incredibly hard to do, to make a game that can actually put a shiver down your spine the way Diablo did.

I still remember the first encounter with the Butcher. It was actually terrifying. You see a half dead soldier at the entrance to the monastery, and you hear his story. On the second floor, you discovered the Butchers hiding place The room was coated in blood, covered with bodies ripped in half and gruesomely displayed. He would come out and kill you before you even had a chance escape.

It was either the catacombs or deep in Hell that were the most frightening. I remember walking to a new room and the first charge of one of those Rhino monsters. I was pushed, and more charged. I died before I had a chance to more.
Worse still were the invisible yellow fiends.

The deeper in the game you went the more horrific it became (except the caves). Hell had an incredibly scary feel to it.
Or that voice, when you read the books which stand on the central pedestals. Learning about the gruesome storyline while simultaneously worrying about an unexpected attack.

Even Diablo, if he started winning the battle, would literally consume you into the darkness.

All I am saying is Diablo II didn’t really have the same “feel”. Its hard to quantify and hard to do, but its deeply intertwined with the monsters looks. Who could ever be frightened of a venom lord? It was so “cartoony” and ridiculous that you just knew you were just playing a fantasy game. I love that don’t get me wrong, rpg’s such as WOW are great fun, But I want __more__. I want that extra frightening “X-factor” that Diablo had, that would actually make you worry and fear for your character.

  33. 33 Eric Aug 14th, 2010 at 7:54 pm

Also just worth mentioning, with respect to the trailer:

A particularly jarring scene is when the monster at the end literally bites one of the players in half. This type of awesome, shocking and unexpected animation is exactly what takes the game to the next level.

I just wished the general atmosphere matched it. The outside made you believe you were playing WOW or living in a cartoon world. Somehow the dark Gothic feel that Diablo had made it more believable and more fun.

Also giving a game a “darker more gothic feel” is much more then just changing the Gamma setting. Its about believability and making monsters that stay in your mind so that you could actually imagine them in the real world. Similar to a monster in a horror movie. You know its fake, but regardless, you can’t stop thinking about it and vividly picturing it, and worrying that it will appear.
You probably wouldn’t remember the “Alien” monster in the same way if it lived in a bright cartoony world.
