PC World has come out with a list of the TOP 50 Most Important People on the Web.
Now, I expected the Google guys to make it to the top. What I didn’t expect is that Mike Morhaime, Blizzard’s President, is right there at number 4!
Considering Steve Jobs is number 2 and Bram Cohen (BitTorrent) is number 3, this is a pretty amazing accomplishment.
Or is it? More than anything, it goes to show how the guys at PC World spend their time: browsing, ipod, torrents, World of Warcraft … and then everything else.
I don’t mind their bias at all. I’m just a bit concerned about all the praise going to WoW though (see below)…
In the world of online gaming, there is World of Warcraft and there is everything else. With 8 million players worldwide, Blizzard earns about $1.5 billion a year on WoW. And each player is breathlessly beholden to Mike Morhaime for the chance–if it ever comes–to obtain that Blade of Eternal Justice…
Blizzard used to be more than a single game company. Now, everyone equates it with WoW and each story focuses on becoming rich off a hit MMO.
It’s high time Blizzard do something about reviving their other franchises with sequels - namely Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2). Complacency is a grave digger in any fast-moving industry.
