Diablo 3 coming in 2007

Paul Sams - Blizzard COO speaks on DiabloThanks to Meza’s comment, we now have our hands on an interview with Paul Sams, Blizzard COO. There’s a host of interesting info about World of Warcraft’s expansion - the Burning Crusade. More importantly though, there’s something about upcoming games from Blizzard in 2007!

StarCraft is my absolutely favorite game of all time. As you probably already know, there is no doubt that we will continue the StarCraft and Diablo franchise, and trust me, I will be the happiest person in the world when we announce StarCraft 2.

According to IGN, while Sams wasn’t ready to spill the beans just yet, he did say Blizzard “will have a major product announcement in 2007,” and that Blizzard was currently working on at least three other unannounced titles at the moment.

That’s three titles in production. There’s NO WAY that they gonna miss on Diablo. If the other one is Starcraft 2, I wonder what the third title could be.

My bet is Diablo 3 will come out in 2007. Blizzard’s last game before WoW was Warcraft 3 which is still (IMHO) the be-all, end-all of good RTS, so there’s little point to rush Starcraft 2. All we have to do is wait for Diablo to steal E3 next year.

I just looked at the stats for my Diablo 2 site. The two most popular characters on the site are the sorceress and the barbarian. Popular in the sense people are looking for specific skill guides and even saves.

I’m wondering which characters will make it to Diablo 3? A pure spell caster should be available, i.e. a sorceror or sorceress of some kind. Then, we need the classic sword - call him barbarian, gladiator, whatever. Blizzard has shown a knack for good (and balanced) mixed breeds - like the Druid or the Paladin.

Looking at the World of Warcraft characters, if Blizzard wants to turn Diablo 3 into a MMORPG they should put a healer of some sort as well. There’s none in the Diablo 2 universe.

Diablo 3 vs WOW

According an ex-Blizzard employee (they are leaving in throves lately), Diablo 3 will have two factions - similar to World of Warcraft. Here’s the scoop:

Diablo 3 takes place in heaven. Hell is trying to take it over and it is AWESOME looking … Imagine the brightness of heaven being taken over by the darkness of hell … Imagine WoW but in a Diablo world in amount of size and playability … Also, guild housing is available in this game for those of you who know about it. They should have a gameplay demo to show at BlizzCon.

Every bit sounds great and convincing BUT the last one. Blizzcon? They had one last year. No Blizzcon has been announced (AFAIK).

E3 Game awards

I know Diablo 3 wasn’t at E3 (or Blizzcon) but that doesn’t mean there was NO E3. On the contrary, it was one of the busiest shows in years. During the show, there’s the Game Critics Awards. They’ve been doing those for the last 8 years or so.

Looking at the nominees, Bill Roper and company got a “nod” in the Best Original Game category with their version of Diablo - Hellgate London. They got another nod for Best RPG. Looks like Blizzard will be playing catch-up with Diablo 3 when it finally comes out.

IGN admits Diablo 3 mistake

One of the main reason a lot of people thought that Diablo 3 will appear at E3 was that the guys at IGN ran some advertisements which HINTED (not in a very subltle way either) that Diablo 3 is slated for release.

A few days before the show, however, they published a tiny note saying:

While certain advertisements on IGN had hinted that Blizzard Entertainment would be showing Diablo 3 at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo, it’s unfortunately untrue. Through a gap in communication, the IGN Insider promo mistakenly implied that the game would be part of the coverage offered at next week’s convention. Sadly for us all, this was simply a production error.

Well, we now know that Diablo 3 didn’t make it to E3. Does that mean the Blizzard aren’t secretly working on it? Does that mean that IGN can’t tell Diablo from WoW? So many questions, so few answers.

Anyway, their loss is Hellgate’s gain. The game’s looking good - just look at the Cabalist character.
