While we’re sitting here wondering if Diablo 3 will ever come out, Bill Roper and company are working hard on their version of Diablo - Hellgate London.
The game is scheduled for release in early 2007. Here’s one of the classes that premiered at E3: a Cabalist.
Hellgate’s gameplay seems quite similar to Diablo as well. And this one looks like a Diablo sorceress to me.

Now that E3 is in the past, what made us think Diablo 3 will premiere at E3? Wishful thinking? Crazy fan art?
I’d say it’s our business savvy. Come on, Blizzard, listen to your local customers.
- We’ll buy Diablo 3 for $69!
- We’ll shell out $99 for a Diablo 3 Collector’s Edition.
- We’ll also buy all kinds of figurines and don’t forget all the books we’ll buy.
I’m putting a $100 bid for the first Diablo sorceress you make (make it like a little Barbie doll!).
Gamespot is a reputable site (unlike my ramblings here or my Diablo 2 site, lol)
When these guys were discussing (professionally) which rumors are true and which are bogus, they voted that Diablo 3 is most likely in development. The specific rumor that they’ve picked up was the one about Diablo 3 soundtrack being recorded in the Czech republic.

An often overlooked aspect of Diablo (the original one) was that it got a huge following that spawned a ton of user-generated content. Jarulf did an amazing Diablo guide in the most laborious way possible - arming weapons and swinging them at enemies for hundreds of times.
When Diablo Hellfire came out a year later, he kept at it, expanding the information through and through. An amazing effort. I’ve put up my own site about Diablo 2, so I can tell that the amount of effort that went into this guide was simply beyond anything I could do.
If you’re a real Diablo fan, this guide will probably bring a tear (or two) to your eye: Jarulf’s Diablo and Hellfire guide. If you need a Diablo 2 guide, you should visit this Diablo 2 website. There’s plenty of Diablo 2 downloads as well: Diablo 2 cheats, saves, maphacks, item editors, runeword recipes, etc.

… are just that - rumors.
My last post (Blizzcon Diablo 3 beta key) stipulated that the beta key Blizzard was giving out was a Diablo 3 beta key. Not so. There’s new evidence to suggest, it’s for the WoW expansion that’s coming out later this year.
Sorry to disappoint. No beta keys this time.

I was going through Ebay looking for some Diablo 2 items for my sorceress. All of a sudden, I hit the following item - a Blizzon ticket that includes a beta key for an “undisclosed” Blizzard game.
Now, without getting all psyched… this could very well be for the WOW expansion.
Yet, a few bloggers have been swearing it could be Diablo 3. Looking at the news we’ve been getting recently - Diablo 3 is still in the making. After all, Blizzard recently recruited an art director to work on it.
On the other hand, I remember I got several Diablo 2 cd keys during the closed beta which was quite a few months before the game was released. We’ll see what happens at the Blizzcon.

Another bit of news about Diablo 3 being in development, an employee of the Bratislava Symphony Orchestra posted information, according to which the orchestra is currently working at the soundtrack for Diablo 3.
The actual email reads:
I am musician in Czech Republic. I play not with one orchestra but with many depending on work. I have recently been to Bratislava in Slovak Republic for recording sessions with local Radio Symphony Orchestra, where we just recorded music for Diablo 3.
According to some sources, this is probably true since the same orchestra recorded the music for the add-on of Diablo II: Lord of Destruction.

Bill Roper, the producer behind Diablo and Diablo II, has been working hard on a game called Hellgate: London. Obviously, the game has some relation to Diablo. There have been rumors that the team left when the management at Blizzard felt that their version of Diablo 3 is not “fun”.
Since the team has left, Blizzard have been recruiting new people to join “the team behind Diablo I and Diablo II” for “an unannounced PC project.” There were positions posted in February for an art director and a team of designers.
Hellgate: London has been in development for some time as well and this is probably putting some pressure on Blizzard to hurry up with their Diablo 3. Otherwise Bill Roper will get it all.

Welcome to the ex-Blizzard employee rumor mill. Once these guys leave Blizzard, there’s no NDA, so you can’t shut their mouths.
According an ex-Blizzard employee, Diablo 3 will be a MMORPG, similar to WOW. There will be two factions: Heaven and Hell (similar to Alliance and Horde in WOW) who’ll be fighting for supremacy.
Now, I can really believe that. Diablo 2 has unlimited and FREE replayablilty over at battle.net. No one at the finance department wants that. They’d rather we pay for it. Here’s one power-player’s opinion:
Diablo just cannot be MMORPG… The game has always been based around overwhelming odds and solo hack and slash glory. Turning it into an MMORPG would take away those factors. Team/faction play would be introduced and it would eliminate the “doomed” feeling one gets when playing the Diablo franchise. The only way you could have it MMO is if it were Angels versus Demons, with the Humans split between each side. It wouldn’t feel anything like the Diablos of old, and most players would become disappointed and quit. At least I would.
Rings true… yet, no one can argue with greed. Greed is good.
Update: Paul Sams, Blizzard’s COO, said that Blizzard is not dead set on making just MMOs. At the same time, Vivendi said ALL future games will be MMOs. Will we see a World of Diablo or a Diablo 3?
There’s numerous clues that something’s cooking at Blizzard. Recently, they posted an advertisement for an art director and a bunch of designers to join “the team behind Diablo I and Diablo II” for “an unannounced PC project.”Now, we all know there’s NO such team. Because the guys who worked on Diablo II left and started a different company. The Blizzard insiders are now saying the team left because what they did wasn’t good enough. As in not FUN enough.
So what happened is that after being in the works for several years, Diablo 3 is looking for a new family. Enter the Art Director and the other guys. Hopefully they’ll be able to show us something by E3 - at least a TRAILER.
